Anonymous Purse-Shaped Marriage Chatelaine ND (c. 19th Century) XF, cf. Mandel-101.5, KCBC-Y-5 (for chatelaine), cf. Mandel-pp. 36-45 (for coin types). Chatelaine: 97x85mm. Ribbons vary from 210 to 255mm in length. Purse-shaped chatelaine with longevity symbol surrounded by five bats on one side, flying dragon surrounded by ten birds and legend on the other, including tassle and six ribbons containing a total of 46 Sang P'yong T'ong Bao seed coins. An extremely rare item, combining numismatic, art historical, and cultural historical interest. Chatelaines were historically gifted to brides on their wedding day and adorned with amulets for protection and/or coins for good luck, and were them hung within the home for the same purpose. A good portion of the coins incorporated into this selection still show traces of the original red pigment typically found on pieces incorporated into these sorts of displays. While it appears that 4-6 ribbons have been lost, those that remain appear in very good condition, with little fraying or serious loss of pigment. Considerably difficult to locate in any condition with ribbons attached, our research suggesting that none have come to market since Stack's sale of the Craig collection in 2014. One side displays a small inventory sticker from Mr. Opitz's collection.
