Netherlands East Indies
Dutch Colony. Willem III copper Pattern "Basket" Duit ND (1836) MS63 Brown NGC, KM-Pn21, Scholten-664 (RR). The sole certified, and quite possibly the finest known, survivor of this very rare duit pattern, and only the third example we have been able to locate coming to auction in the past 15+ years. Notably scarcer than the popular "Swan" duit, Scholten suggests that such patterns may have been produced to ascertain the exact cost of minting duits, or otherwise may have been struck by several firms who solicited the right to supply the planchets for duits in the Indies. From a visual perspective, the surfaces appear a glossy cocoa brown, fiery cupric red accents at the devices with hardly any of the usual evidence of corrosion. Likely even finer than the Scholten plate piece, and immensely desirable as such.
