South Africa
Republic gold "Veld" Pond 1902 AU Details (Mount Removed) NGC, Pilgrims Rest mint, KM11, Fr-4, Hern-Z54. One of reportedly only 968 examples of this soldier's pay coinage struck during the Boer War, with its overall charismatic design--much more endearing that the earlier Kaalponds--and generally low mintage, leading many to be mounted and used in jewelry in the years following the conflict. Despite this, the noted mount removal seems to have caused little disturbance to the surfaces, which show comparably light handling. An ever-popular type, and a veritable must of the South African series.
