Rama IV silver "Royal Gift" 1/8 Baht (Fuang) ND (1857-1858) MS63 NGC, Bangkok mint, KM-X11, LeMay-pp. 94-95, Plate XXII, 4, Krisadaolarn/Mihailovs-pg. 152, Plate F10. Plain edge. Bannakan ('Royal Gift') issue. A truly stunning 'pattern' type, representing the first modern machine-made coinage of Rama IV--thanks to the generous gift of a minting plant by Queen Victoria in 1857--and virtually unknown at auction according to our research. While the Bannakan issues, featuring a recognizably different elephant design, were at least largely intended as gifts for the British Queen, Krisadaolarn and Mihailovs distinguish between Proof strikings produced in England and non-Proof pieces, some of which were intended for circulation locally. Displaying some minor die rust in the fields as is emblematic of the Bangkok mint for the period, the design otherwise appears fully expressed and lustrous, with golden toning accents that add a further degree of quality. Mislabeled on the holder as KM-Pn20, a pattern striking of the later circulation issue.
