Rama IV copper Pattern "Royal Gift" 1/2 Baht (2 Salung) ND (1857-1858) XF (Tooled), Bangkok mint(?), KM-Unl. (cf. KM-X13 for silver issue, noted as Rare), cf. LeMay-pp. 94-95, Plate XXII, 2 (this denomination unlisted), Krisadaolarn/Mihailovs-pp. 152-153, Plates F12 & F13. 28mm. 8.22gm. Bannakan ('Royal Gift') type. An extraordinary and very rare pattern issue, likely produced in anticipation for the first machine-struck silver coinage of Thailand, which was made on a hand-operated press given to Rama IV by Queen Victoria in 1857, and was intended as a gift for the queen. Featuring a distinctive elephant from the standard circulation issues, the edges of the piece appear to have been smoothed down, perhaps for use in a bezel. Sold with old collector flip from Dr. Jacobs.
