Rama V copper-nickel Pattern 1/2 Att (Solot) CS 1236 (1874) MS63 NGC, London mint, KM-Unl. (cf. KM-Y17 for standard issue), LeMay-Unl., Krisadaolarn/Mihailovs-Unl. An intriguing pattern from this relatively short-lived monogram coinage that was only produced for circulation in copper. Although Krisadaolarn and Mihailovs note that "off-metal strikes are reported, but so far all specimens observed by the authors appeared to be ordinary plated strike coins", this does not appear to be the case on the present specimen; the strike is exceptionally sharp, with glassy luster around the devices producing a nearly specimen-quality finish. For comparison, we note that a similar piece appeared in Superior's May 1995 sale of the Irving Goodman Collection (lot 537). Toned to a mild lilac hue, it is sure to garner fierce bidding amongst collectors.
