Rama V silver Essai Baht RS 127 (1908) AU58 NGC, Paris mint, KM-E1, VG-4661 var. (engraver's signature to left of bust), LeMay-Unl., Krisadaolarn/Mihailovs-pg. 181, Plate F55 var. (engraver's signature to left of bust). By Henri-Auguste Patey. Engraver's signature at the king's right (viewer's left) shoulder. Seemingly the scarcest variety of this already remarkably difficult essai, featuring a different positioning of the engraver's signature than on the majority of examples--most specimens plated in catalogs and appearing at auction having it above the king's left (viewer's right) shoulder; Krisadaolarn and Mihailovs note the existence of such varieties as "very rare." This is only the second such representative that we have seen, the last appearing in our 2012 CICF Auction #3019. Struck in brilliant finish with light russet tones and only minimal handling.
