People's Republic Pu-erh Bingcha Tea Cake of 10.8 Ounces ND (c. 1950s-1970s) AU/UNC (Chipped), Opitz-pg. 339 (this piece illustrated). 87mm. 306.1gm. Both sides are blank with a small paper label, with the characters Zhong Cha (brand name: "China Tea") encased within the cake. Reportedly, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, due to a void in the production of Yunnan tea cakes owing to political unrest, the Guangdong Tea Company began to produce saucer-shaped tea cakes, each containing a green and red label indicating Indian-grade tea. These came to be known as Guangyun Tribute cakes, and were originally wrapped in a thin bamboo paper. This lot is sold with an old Jacques Schulman envelope, containing a small inventory sticker from Mr. Opitz's collection.
