Hong Kong Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation 50 Dollars 1.1.1934 Pick 175d KNB64b-c Duress Note PMG Very Fine 30. A simply beautiful example, this middle denomination was issued with only three dates for this design. Interestingly, HSBC did not issue another $50 denomination until 1968. Because of the high face value and buying power of this denomination, it was issued in small batches long after its printed date. 200,000 banknotes dated 1930 and 1934 were forcibly issued, under duress, by the Japanese during World War II. Superb paper is seen on this original example, with natural embossing still visible. The manuscript signature was applied under surveillance by Japanese forces to facilitate commerce in the colony during occupation. These historic banknotes are rare in any grade. An annotation is noted. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/hong-kong-hongkong-and-shanghai-banking-corporation-50-dollars-111934-pick-175d-knb64b-c-duress-note-pmg-very-fine/a/4023-28122.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4023 HID08706262019 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
