Hong Kong Mercantile Bank of India, Limited 50 Dollars 1.7.1935 Pick 240a KNB16a PMG Very Fine 30. One of Hong Kong's most iconic banknotes, due in equal parts to its rarity and splendid Waterlow & Sons engravings. The Mercantile Bank of India, Limited had a long and storied history in the colony, although it never printed banknotes in large quantities. This example features a five digit serial number without prefix, which should hint at the limited issuance of this beautiful denomination. In fact, only 40,000 notes were issued featuring this date. We have only offered this date once previously, with this example being far superior. Vivid colors, clean paper, and mild circulation are seen. The edges and margins are well above average for Hong Kong notes of this era. This example is void of notations, ink stamps, or other distractions so often seen on higher denomination types. Minor restorations are mentioned for accuracy, which is virtually impossible to detect through the third party holder. An important offering, very rare in any grade, and especially desirable at the Very Fine level with excellent eye appeal. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/hong-kong-mercantile-bank-of-india-limited-50-dollars-171935-pick-240a-knb16a-pmg-very-fine-30/a/4023-28144.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4023 HID08706262019 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
