Thailand Government of Thailand 1000 Baht ND (1944) Pick 53s1 Specimen PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. An impressive, highest denomination Specimen, this banknote resulted from an interesting confluence of events. At the onset of World War II, Thailand was surrounded by British and French Colonies, which led the Allies to assume Thai support in the region. However, quick action on the part of the Japanese swayed opinion in Thailand. Sharing mutual aspirations of new territory with Japan, Thailand declared war on Britain in 1942. The Japanese coasted through the Thai peninsula which lead to Axis victories in Malaya and Singapore as a result. Traditional banknote suppliers refused Thai orders, which lead to a money shortage. Local and Japanese printers filled the void during the War. This offered example is the highest denomination of the Japanese-printed series. A fully issued example was transformed into a Specimen with a bright red overprint. We have offered no finer graded examples, adding desirability to this already scarce type. A historic Southeast Asian emission. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/thailand-government-of-thailand-1000-baht-nd-1944-pick-53s1-specimen-pmg-gem-uncirculated-65-epq/a/4023-28215.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4023 HID08706262019 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
