Edward the Confessor (1042-66), Penny, 'Hammer Cross' type, Bristol, Godwine, 1.20g, 6h, rev. + GODPINE ON BRVGSTO (Abergavenny Hoard [2016], no. 42 same dies; Freeman 78; N.828; BMC XI; S.1182), wavy flan with softness in parts to periphery, otherwise portrait neatly struck up, an unusual mint reading (BRVGSTO | BRVCSTO) known to Godwine and his contemporaries Ælfwine and Ælfric only, a bold very fine, rare.
