William the Conqueror (1066-87), Penny, 'Bonnet' type, Stafford, Godwine, 1.23g, 8h (to m.m.), rev. + [G]ODPINE ON STEFFOR (Allen [2012], pp. 80; N.842; BMC II, and no. 140; S.1251), a pinhole at obverse 4 o'clock resulting in minor edge loss, otherwise attractive dark tone, near very fine and rare.

Examples of this rare mint have graced the collections of Lawrence [1903], Crowther [1904] and the infamous Colonel Durrant [1847]. However at the famous Shepherd dispersal [1885, lot 112] a parallel coin to the present offering was snapped up by Messrs Spink and Son for an impressive £4.17.6 despite only being described as 'fine'.
