William the Conqueror (1066-87), Penny, 'Profile right' type, Thetford, Folcard, 1.14g, 4h, rev. [+] FOLCÆRD ON DTFR (EMC 2007.0157 this coin; SCBI [East Anglia], 1370 same obverse die; cf. Carlyon-Britton [1912], pp. 137; N.847; BMC VII; S.1256), struck with a flawed and aged obverse die latterly employed for the striking of mules with the PAXS type, otherwise toned, good fine for issue, and very rare and possibly the only known 'true' type VII for Folcard of Thetford.
Provenance
The Isladulcie Collection of Medieval Pennies and Fractions
Found at Hindringham, Norfolk (acquired Outwell, Cambs 10 May 2007)

The present cataloguer is unable to trace a parallel for a 'true' type VII coin struck for Folcard at Thetford. The only die parallel is that found on the type VII/VIII mule housed in an insitutional collection and formerly in the Montagu (part V, 1897, lot 78[b](, and Marsham (1888, lot 226) dispersals. SImilarly Carlyon-Britton does not list a true coin in his corpus of the coinage of William I and II in his article on the Thetford Mint for his 1912 BNJ article.
Estimate: £250 - £350
