Afonso VI countermarked revalidation 500 Reis ND (1663) XF45 NGC, KM37, Gomes-44.03. 21.53gm. Crowned "500" countermark (AU Standard) upon Porto mint, Portugal 400 Reis (Cruzado) of João IV (1640-1656), applied upon these coins per law of March 22, 1663 (and later per edict of July 7, 1663 in Brazil) to raise their value by 25%. Quite nice for the issue, with mild wear and hints of luster remaining.
