Pedro II double-countermarked revalidation 250 Reis ND (1688) XF40 NGC, KM33.2, Gomes-104.01. 11.18gm. Type IV counterstamp (XF Standard). A convoluted double-countermarked issue, representing two separate revalidations 25 years apart. The base coin is a Lisbon, Portugal 200 Reis (½ Cruzado) of João IV (1640-1656). Upon this is stamped a crowned "250", applied upon these coins per law of March 22, 1663 (and later per edict of July 7, 1663 in Brazil) to raise their value by 25%. The second countermark is a new central circular legend stamp with a leaf edge design, applied to prevent clipping per an edict of June 1688 that mandated to recall all coins previously countermarked in 1663. This operation was performed at the Lisbon and Porto mints, the latter officially reopening on June 15, 1688 (one day after the edict authorizing the overstrike) for this specific purpose. Deeply toned and wholesome, with much detail of both the host coin and each countermark visible. Date mistakenly noted as 1698 upon holder.
