Pedro II double-countermarked revalidation 500 Reis ND (1688) VF Details (Scratches) NGC, KM37, Gomes-113.01. Type IV counterstamp. A convoluted double-countermarked issue, representing two separate revalidations 25 years apart. The base coin is a Porto mint, Portugal 400 Reis (Cruzado) of João IV (1640-1656). Upon this is stamped a crowned "500", applied upon these coins per law of March 22, 1663 (and later per edict of July 7, 1663 in Brazil) to raise their value by 25%. The second countermark is a central circular stamp, applied per an edict of June 1688 that mandated the recalling of all coins previously countermarked in 1663. This operation was performed at the Lisbon and Porto mints, the latter officially reopening on June 15, 1688 (one day after the edict authorizing the overstrike) for this specific purpose. Deeply toned with moderate wear, a pair of short but fairly deep scratches accounting for the assigned grade. Date mistakenly noted as 1698 upon holder.
