L. Calpurnius Piso Frugi. 90 BC. AR Denarius (20mm, 3.97 g, 9h). Rome mint. Laureate head of Apollo right; LXXXV to left / Horseman galloping right, holding palm frond and reins; CVI above, Roma monogram below exergual line. Crawford 340/1; Sydenham 661 var. (without exergual line); Calpurnia 12 var. (same); Type as RBW 1256. Light iridescent toning, some light scratches and marks. VF. Extremely rare variety with exergual line on reverse.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection.

Only known die with an exergual line in this series – a significant variety and extremely rare as such. Much superior to the RBW example (RBW 1256 = NAC 63, lot 32) of the same dies. Control marks LXXXV on the obverse and CVI/ROMA monogram on the reverse. [Andrew McCabe]
