L. Rubrius Dossenus. 87 BC. AR Denarius (17.5mm, 3.90 g, 4h). Rome mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right, with scepter over shoulder / Triumphal quadriga right, with side-panel decorated with thunderbolt; above, Victory flying right, holding a wreath. Crawford 348/1; Sydenham 705; Rubria 1; Type as RBW 1322. Attractive light toning, weakly struck in areas. Good VF.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection.

This issue is hard to find with a clear Victory above the chariot and both legends in place. Crawford in RRC argues for this being a triumphal quadriga rather than 'tensae' used to carry 'sacra' of the gods as considered by Borghesi, Cavedoni, and Mommsen. [Andrew McCabe]
