MACEDONIA. Under the Romans. AE 24 (7.89 gms), Philippi Mint, ca. A.D. 253-268.
Radiate head of Divus Augustus right; Reverse: Emperor on horseback prancing right with right hand raised and cloak flying from shoulder. An enigmatic issue whose purpose and origins are still not fully understood. Struck during the reign of Gallienus this coin is part of a short series struck with the names and portraits of three deified emperors, Augustus, Trajan and Marcus Aurelius while having various reverses and Latin legends. An excellent example from this enigmatic series with good centering and fully struck legends and devices. Some tooling is evident but does not detract from the overall appeal of the portrait and red patina. A curious and rare issue.BOLD VERY FINE.
