MYSIA. Cyzicus. EL Stater (15.90 gms), ca. 400-350 B.C.
SNG Cop-unlisted; BMC-unlisted; Rosen-unlisted. Laureate bearded head of male (Zeus or Poseidon) left; Reverse: Incuse quadripartite square. A very interesting and seemingly unlisted type which combines elements from the coins of Cyzicus and Lampsacus.
Similar types appear at the very end of the quadripartite reverse types of Cyzicus. However, very similar obverse portraits appear on the Pegasus reverse types at Lampsacus. We classify this piece as Cyzicus due to the weight being in line with the standard use there and the appearance of what may be a tunny fish below the portrait.BOLD VERY FINE.
Estimate: $20000
