PERSIA. Alexandrian Empire. Babylon. AV Double Daric (17.18 gms), Mazaios as Satrap of Babylon (331-328 B.C), ca. 331-328 B.C.
Baaltars seated left holding scepter in left hand and eagle, wheat stalk and grape wine in right; Reverse: Lion attacking bull to left within linear square frame. VERY RARE.
One of the only three of this type known and the second with the reverse design facing left. Struck during the governorship of Mazaios after he surrendered Babylon to Alexander The Great following the Macedonian victory at Gaugamela.
Though uninscribed the design is similar to coins struck under Mazaios when he was Satrap of Cilicia. Other "local" Babylonian coins were struck at this time including Double Darics featuring the Persian running archer/ king motif. It is unknown at present time why this type was struck or for how long, though based on the extreme rarity of this type, it would seem to have been a short period.BOLD VERY FINE.
Estimate: $60000
