ROMAN REPUBLIC

AE Aes Grave As (245.97 gms), ca. 264-240 B.C.
TV-45; Cr-unlisted; Syol-95; S-526. Lion's head facing with sword in mouth left; Reverse: Horse head left. VERY RARE.

A mainly unclassified type the origin of which is mostly speculatory. In his commentary on the Aes Grave of Rome, Thurlow theorizes that this type may have been made to commemorate Rome's final victory over Carthage in 240 B.C. To this end, Thurlow points to the use of the symbol of Carthage, the horse on the reverse; while a lion (a symbol associated with war and dominance) appears on the obverse. This claim has good historical support as it was not uncommon for Rome to utilize the sigils and symbols of vanquished foes on commemorative coin issues.

Well preserved and with excellent retention of the design. Only minor spots of encrustation and a dark green, nearly black, patina over the entire surface.BOLD VERY FINE.

Estimate: $10000
