ANTONINUS PIUS, (A.D. 138-161), AE sestertius, (23.95 g), Rome mint, issued A.D. 148-149, obv. laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right, around ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P X[II], rev. crossed cornucopiae each surmounted by a child's bust, [COS IIII] below, S C across field, (S.4236, RIC 857, C.813). Deep brown patina, nearly very fine and a scarce type.

Ex Dr V.J.A. Flynn Collection. The infants on the cornucopiae represent the twin babies Titus Aurelius Antoninus and Lucilla, born to Faustina II and Marcus Aurelius. The boy died later that year; Lucilla became empress after her marriage to Lucius Verus (164), only to be executed by her brother Commodus in 182 AD.
