CARACALLA, (A.D. 198-217), AE as, issued 210, Rome mint, (9.47 g), obv. laureate head to right of Caracalla, around ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, rev. Victory standing to right inscribing a shield attached to a palm tree, S C across, around PONTIF TR P XIII COS III, (cf.S.7007, RIC 457a, C.475. Slightly off centred on the obverse, dark green patination on the reverse, otherwise good very fine/nearly extremely fine and rare.
Ex Duke of Argyl Collection (who acquired it originally from A.H.Baldwin and Sons London for 42/-) and Spink & Son London November 20, 1952 and then from the Cornelius C. Vermeule Collection, as sold in Triton III, 30th November 1999 (lot 1716 part) for the benefit of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with tickets, recently from Noble Numismatics Sale 66 (lot 3646 at hammer of $380).
