Recommendation: On the morning 20/9/1917 near Zonnebeke during a heavy bombardment by the enemy and when the enemy machine guns were sweeping the trench Corporal Whitby displayed remarkable coolness and deliberation, using his Lewis Gun to such advantage that enemy parties advancing against our position were repulsed and totally dispersed. His conduct and example in the line was excellent.
