INDIA, British, Bombay Mint, a silver rupee blank neatly engraved on one side 'First blank/New Mint/Jan 21st/1864/J.A.Ballard MM', roughly scratched on the other side 'New Bombay' (Pridmore 1043). Nearly extremely fine and unique.
Ex W.J.Noble (Sale 61B, lot 1536), F.Pridmore Sale (lot 193) and Mark E.Freehill collections.
Made as a souvenir to commemorate the commencement of production at the New Bombay Mint in 1865; Col J.A.Ballard, R.E., held the appointment of Mint Master, Bombay Mint, from 1862 to 1879 (see Pridmore Vol II pp.55, 62 and 65). Pridmore on his ticket suggests this piece was given to the engineer on completion of his task of supervising the construction of the new mint prior to his return to England.
