GERMANY. Gau Warthe Commemorative Badge, Special Grade, 1939.
55 mm; 48.65 gms. Forman-210d; cf. Vernon-3115; Nimmergut/Feder/Von Der Heyde-5255. 14kt gold, diamonds, sapphires. Eagle in white gold at center, facing sinister, wings displayed, perched on white gold wreath with swastika of the Third Reich at center. The eagle is set with approximately 185 small channel set diamonds. A plow and crossed sword, with diamond encrusted hilt, also in white gold, affixed below, the date “1939”, at the base, all rivet-mounted to an open yellow gold wreath of oak, which surrounds. The swastika and digits of the date are set with fine cut blue sapphires. An exquisite work of art in its own right and quite striking in hand. Finely finished throughout. The wreath exhibits a fine matte-like finish on the obverse, while only trivial handling evident on the high points. The white gold areas are variously lustrous, or highly polished. Reverse: A single hinged tunic pin and markings of the gold fineness, and of the maker (raised “K” within a circle, notched twice at right, and three chevrons in an inset circle). Lightly worn on this side, consistent with standard use on the dress uniform of the original recipient.
This badge is a civil award for outstanding service to the Nazi Party within the province or Gau Warthland—a political division formed from the territory annexed from Poland at the beginning of World War II. This badge exists in several forms, this being of the finest class reserved for organizers of the Gau. Records suggest that about 15 of these were originally awarded, and according to our research, the present example is the sixth known, the first we have handled. A superb relic of the Third Reich and likely destined for an advanced collection of decorations.
