MACEDON. Philippi. Ca. 356-345 BC. AV stater (16mm, 8.57 g, 11h). NGC Choice XF 4/5 - 4/5, edge marks. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / ΦIΛIΠΠΩN, tripod lebes with leonine feet; head of stag right to right. Bellinger, Philippi 18. HGC 3, 628 corr. (more symbols). Boston MFA 583 = Warren 593. Very rare.

Ex Jonathan P. Rosen Collection

This specimen is part of the second issue produced by the city of Philippi, following the Macedonian recolonization of Krenides under Philip II. The variety with stag head is particularly rare, with about five pieces known, including those in the British Museum. The gold for these issues came from the Skapté-Hylé mines, long held by Thasos until Athens captured them in the fifth century BC.
