Danish West Indies
Danish Colony. Frederik VII Counterstamped 50 Cents ND (1850) MS62 NGC, KM27 (4-5 known), Hede-24, Sieg-pg. 289. Displaying a crowned FR VII monogram countermark on a United States Seated Liberty 1/2 Dollar (50 Cents) from 1849. Perhaps one of the most elusive and enigmatic emissions of the Danish West Indies, purportedly counterstruck under the Authority of June to September 1850, with the Seated Liberty half dollars representing one of the few regulated issues that can be considered to be genuine to the period. Handsomely preserved with a peach-tinged patina emerging from beneath gunmetal surfaces, the present example represents one of only 2 certified by NGC, the other piece grading a mere XF45. According to the 2010 Roehrs listing, this coin originally came with a ticket suggesting a provenance back to 1882, which, following Jørgen Sømod's Mønter fra Dansk Vestindien, would make it lot 1681 from a March 27 auction in Copenhagen, previously owned by P. Hauberg, C.T. Jørgensen, and supposedly Emil Gluckstadt and Waldo Newcomer.
