Dominica
British Colony Countermarked Dollar (10 Bits) ND (1770-1772) XF45 PCGS, KM20 (under Martinique), Prid-16 (under Dominica). Displaying a heart-shaped Type IV countermark cut on a Ferdinand VI 8 Reales 1755 Mo-MM from Mexico (cf. KM104.2). Historically cataloged under Martinique, it is now believed that these pieces were actually cut in Gibraltar and then exported to the Caribbean for use in Martinique or Dominica, with Pridmore noting that this action was performed solely to retain money in the island/s of use. The type displays a characteristically heart-shaped piercing with a patterned border on the cut edges. Attractively toned to a dark steel hue, and bearing an illustrious pedigree bound to only amplify collector interest.
