Dominican Republic
Republic silvered-copper Proof Pattern 10 Reales 1855 PR64 NGC, KM-Pn1, cf. Guttag-1683A (listed in copper), Gomez-81. Reeded edge. An exceptional near-gem offering of this most elusive pattern type, apparently existing as one of just three examples of this design to have come to auction in the last fifteen years, with the piece from the Whittier collection struck in solid silver rather than silvered copper. Representing the first crown of the independent Dominican Republic, its denomination based on the largest issue of the Spanish crown--last struck under Charles and Johanna in the 16th century--it quickly proved impractical at a time when the remainder of Latin American countries followed the 8 Reales standard, to be quickly succeeded by the Peso. Superbly Proof in finish and featuring razor-sharp precision throughout, this piece is presently the single finest in the NGC census and one of two examples awarded a Proof designation.
