German States
Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. August II 4 Taler 1666-HS AU53 NGC, Zellerfeld mint, KM488, Dav-LS84, Welter-781a. 116.30gm. With the denomination "4" stamped at the base of the reverse. Struck to commemorate the 88th birthday of August II. A fitting canvass for this intricately detailed presentation piece or Schautaler, making full use of the expansive size of its absolutely massive flan. One of the largest issues commissioned for August II's 88th birthday, this series included denominations from 1-1/2 Taler up to 6 Taler. Only minorly doubled with full expression in the duke's face and a highly ornamented reverse coat of arms, this well-toned cabinet piece is the finest of only two seen by NGC to-date.
