German States
Saxe-Meiningen. Bernhard I Taler 1680 MS61 NGC, Gotha mint, KM8, Dav-7498, Merseburger-3415 (RR), Schnee-536. Struck upon the death of Bernhard's first wife, Maria Hedwig of Hesse-Darmstadt. Perhaps one of the most elusive 'Schautalers' from this period of Saxon history, and certainly singular in its illustration of the reigning duke's recently deceased wife. Exhibiting an almost lifelike portrayal of Maria Hedwig, even while some other elements of the strike are slightly doubled, pointing towards Bernhard's deep affection for his wife. Difficult to acquire in all grades, most of all Mint State.
