Great Britain
James I gold Laurel ND (1621-1623) MS64 NGC, Tower mint, Thistle mm, Third Coinage, KM74, S-2638A, N-2113. 9.08gm. (thistle) IACOBVS D: G: MAG: BRI: FRAN: ET: HIB: REX, third laureate bust of James I left, XX (denomination) behind / FACIAM | EOS IN | GENTEM | VNVM (thistle), crowned royal shield with long cross dividing the flan into four quadrants. It almost goes without saying that locating any of James I's laurel coinage in anything approaching gem quality is generally a far cry, with the high purchasing power of the denomination (20 Shillings) leading many to be used in personal adornment, and thus to come cleaned, mounted, or pierced, or otherwise bent due to the thinness of the flan. Not plagued by any of these problems, the coin at hand appears fully struck, lustrous, and entirely original, even James's facial features finding full expression. The finest certified, and very rare as such.
