Great Britain
Charles II gold "Elephant" 2 Guineas 1664 AU53 NGC, KM425.2, S-3334. Elephant below bust. What may truly be considered to be a premium representative of this iconic 'hallmarked' type and seriously underrated denomination within Charles' gold series--the 1664 "Elephant" 2 Guineas. The first year of issue for this emission that helped give the Guinea its name, the elephant denotes the source of the specie used to mint the coin, imported from Guinea by the Royal African Company. Often found heavily circulated or with serious post-mint alterations, this is one of a small group of 8 specimens certified at the AU level by NGC, usually the highest level one could hope for the type, with a stray MS64 ranking as the clear outlier.
