Great Britain
William & Mary gold 5 Guineas 1693 AU50 PCGS, KM479.1, S-3422. QVINTO edge. A thoroughly elusive type from the relatively short-lived joint monarchy of William and Mary, characteristically plagued, as with their whole series, by shallow engraving--its large size often resulting in numerous dings and use in jewelry. As such, most examples that come down to the present day rarely escape the XF level, both the NGC and PCGS census reports revealing a steep drop-off of the population above AU. While rub is certainly evident atop the highest points, the offering preserves strong integral details in the design and the peripheral regions contain a considerably finer finish, lightly tinged with amber toning accents and glassy residual mint luster.
