George II gold Proof 1/2 Guinea 1728 PR64 Cameo NGC, KM565.1, S-3681, W&R-75 (R4). An incredible and well-pedigreed Proof striking of this already handsome fractional guinea, currently defined as one of 5 certified examples to receive a cameo designation, the surfaces fully reflective and chock full of die polish lines. While assigned a rarity of R4 by Wilson and Rasmussen, indicating 11-20 specimens known, this type actually appears to be far scarcer than many types which the authors have granted higher rarity ratings. Among the finest we have had the privilege to handle, the last at this level (certified PR64 without a cameo designation) brought an impressive $15,000 in our January New York auction #3081.
