Great Britain
Victoria gold Sovereign 1838 MS64 NGC, KM736.1, S-3852. A superb representative of its date and issue, the offering at hand was struck in the first year of issue for Victoria's coinage and accordingly represents a significantly less attainable date in a long-running series, many later dates of which are comparatively common. However, this specimen ranks near the very peak of certified quality seen for the date, with a meager two examples certified more highly by NGC. The distinction is fully deserved, the surfaces ignited by mint luster that leaps across the fields with ease, unobstructed by heavier handling or contact. Yet further, the strike is full, leaving a distinct sharpness to the Queen's youthful features and the reverse shield motif.
