Great Britain
Victoria gold Sovereign 1879 MS63 NGC, KM752, S-3856A, Marsh-90 (R4). Serving as an uncontestable rarity of the British Sovereign series, the 1879 Victorian Sovereign would ultimately be produced to only 20,000 examples. When one compares this figure to the surrounding dates for the type, 1878 received a production well in excess of 1,000,000, with the date subsequent to the present offering seeing 3,650,000 struck. It is no wonder, then, that 1879-dated issues receive a great deal of attention from collectors. Most collectors will never even experience a surviving Mint State representative in hand, an observation supported by both the NGC and PCGS censuses, the former of which sees only two specimens certified in uncirculated condition, and the latter not a single example to-date. This, the absolute finest seen by the grading services and recognized by NGC for its choice quality of preservation, displays abundant golden brilliance, capped by a firm strike that leaves even the often weaker elements, including the upper torso of St. George, rendered to admirable clarity. A scarce, if not unique, opportunity, and a coin destined to draw the eyes of Sovereign collectors the world over.
