Papal States. Pius IX gold 100 Lire Anno XXI (1866)-R MS62 PCGS, Rome mint, KM1383, Fr-278. Located at the upper end of quality seen for this issue, which saw a total mintage of a mere 1,115 pieces struck. Such low figures hardly leave room for any meaningful die deterioration, and indeed, Pius's features are fully embedded upon the planchet, enveloped by flashy aurous luster that provides the final touch of confirmation for the Mint State grade assigned by PCGS. Scarce in this preservation, and accordingly tied for second finest certified to-date across both PCGS and NGC combined.
