Japan
Meiji silver Proof Pattern Yen Year 3 (1870) AU Details (Mounted, Repaired) NGC, Royal mint, KM-Pn16, J&V-Q1 (ER). By L. C. Wyon. An extraordinarily rare pattern issue for the first machine-struck yen of Japan, minted just two years after the Japanese had acquired decommissioned Hong Kong mint equipment and established their first modern minting operation at Osaka. Designed by the famous British engraver L. C. Wyon--known particularly for his engraving of Victoria's Golden Jubilee coinage of 1887--only a small handful of survivors are thought to exist, with just three other examples certified by NGC. Reportedly missing from the Royal Mint Collection, William Hocking's The Catalogue of the Coins, Tokens, Medals, Dies and Seals in the Museum of the Royal Mint, Vol II recording just two white metal pieces (pp. 140-141, die nos. 4040, 4041), this is the third specimen we have offered.
