Martinique
French Colony gold Regulated/Counterstamped 22 Livres ND (c. 1802) AU55 PCGS, KM36, cf. Prid-pg. 242 & 247 (this date not listed), cf. Gordon Variety B (same). 14.27gm. Displaying 22 over eagle countermark (UNC Detail) on an original Jose I 6400 Reis (4 Escudos) from Portugal (cf. KM240). A much rarer variation of this ever-popular West Indies countermarked gold type, and the only example of this host date we have been able to locate. According to Gordon, the 22 over Eagle stamp was reserved for genuine Portuguese coins, whereas the 20 over Eagle stamp was used on contemporary counterfeit "Joes" of America, Geneva and other countries, in accordance with the September 17, 1804 decree that Martinique follow the same system of ratings for regulating coins as Guadeloupe. While showing extremely minor handling, the host coin appears relatively well-executed and preserved, full detail expressed in the features with traces of mint luster in the margins.
