Charles & Johanna "Early Series" 4 Reales ND (1536-1542) P/R ·M·-·M· AU58 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM0016, Cal-70, Nesmith-Unl. A rare issue, struck from modified dies, with the diagonal leg of the former 'R' assayer initial mostly removed to become a 'P', indicated Rincón's replacement by either Pedro de Espina or Pedro de la Membrilla as assayer of the Mexico City mint. Additionally, the type displays characteristics from older Rincon issues, with a PLVSV-initialed circular panel instead of the transitional rhomboid style. Only the second example we have seen from these dies, and clearly the finer of the two, with a well-centered and bold strike that shows minimal doubling, golden-gray color and minimal corrosion over the surfaces. An absolute prize coin for the specialist.
