Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1712 L-M MS61 NGC, Lima mint, KM38.2, Cal-23. 26.91gm. From the 1715 Plate Fleet. A satiny and richly toned example of this sea-salvaged issue, recovered from the wrecks of the ill-fated yet famous 1715 Spanish treasure fleet. The central obverse features are remarkably well-embossed upon the planchet for the issue, which often displays legibility issues or doubling so significant that the outlines of the devices are blurred and indistinct. Meanwhile, the surfaces indicate almost no handling at all since its recovery, pointing to the grade being primarily limited by the coin's natural changes underwater rather than any heavier-handed treatment. A superb issue, sold with the Historic Treasure Management, Inc. document titled "A Brief History of Your Spanish Coin", which includes a photo of the piece.
