Nicholas I gold "Reign for Our Glory" Medal ND (1839) SP62 PCGS, Smirnov-Unl., Reichel-Unl., cf. Diakov-547.1 (unlisted in gold; this type featured on the cover). 65mm. 205.32gm. By F. Brasseux. NICOLAS I EMPEREUR DE TOUTES LES RUSSIES., bare head of Nicholas I right / ЦAPTBУЙ HA CЛABУ HAMЪ., ornate medallion with Saints Nicholas, Andrew, and Vladimir (together with St. George on horseback) supporting an open book inscribed "Code of Laws" in Russian, symbols of the military and nautical arts surrounding. A truly imposing medal and an impressive artifice to the 'Glory of Russia', as symbolized in the reverse scene, with this type apparently unpublished in gold. Quite clearly pandering to Nicholas I's flattering self-image--his idea of the glory of the state tightly bound to his oppressive autocratic regime of oversight known as the Nicholaevan or Nicholas System--this majestic specimen is struck in remarkably high relief, with nearly Prooflike surfaces and frosty devices, only a small scattering of wisps bounding the designation. Fittingly, the reverse of this type is featured on the cover of volume 4 of Diakov's Medals of the Russian Empire.
