Ferdinand & Isabella (1474-1504) gold 4 Excelentes ND (from 1497) (Aqueduct)-A XF45 NGC, Segovia mint, Cal-13, Cay-2954, MEC VI-Unl., ORC-291. +FЄRnAnDuS: ЄT: hЄLISABЄT: D: G: RЄX: ЄT: RЄGInA: (double-annulet stops), crowned facing busts of Ferdinand and Isabella, aqueduct above, A to right, o over IIII below / :SVB: VnBRA' : ALARVm: TVARVm: PROTЄGЄ: nOSVS (double-annulet stops), crowned royal shield over nimbate eagle. Perhaps one of the most instantly recognizable designs from the hammered gold coinage of Spain, most familiar to collectors from the more common Double Excelentes, but rarely seen in this extra large 'quadruple' format. One of just 7 certified to-date by NGC, this is only the third example we have been able to locate coming to auction in recent years. Well-executed throughout the design with minimal peripheral weakness, and a highly sought-after issue in all grades.
