Ancients
Revolt of the Heraclii (AD 608-610). AV solidus (21mm, 4.49 gm, 6h). NGC MS 4/5 - 3/5, light graffiti. Jerusalem or military mint in Cyprus or Syria, AD 610. d N hЄRACLI-uS PP AVG, crowned, draped, and cuirassed bust of Heraclius (resembling Phocas) facing, globus cruciger in right hand; pellet in left field, thick border / VICTORIA-AVSЧ IΠ, angel standing facing, long staff surmounted by staurogram in right hand, globus cruciger in left; CONOB in exergue. Sear 850 (Jerusalem). DOC II 186 (Alexandria). MIB II 76 (Cyprus). Extremely rare.

S. Bendall and M. F. Hendy initially identified this issue as a product of the Jerusalem mint issued during the eastern wars of Heraclius, shortly before the fall of the city to the Sasanians in AD 614. New evidence suggests the issue occurred at an Eastern mint (possibly Cyprus) during the revolt of Heraclius and his father, the exarch of Carthage, against the regime of Phocas in Constantinople. The imperial effigy closely resembles Phocas and not the image of Heraclius which became established after he seized control of Constantinople in AD 610.
