João V gold 1600 Reis 1727-R VG08 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM126, LMB-182. Oval shield type. A seemingly underappreciated series rarity, which though listed at a similar rarity to the surrounding dates struck at the Rio mint--1728, 1729, and 1730--and a fraction of the value of the corresponding year from Bahia, is nonetheless the first example we have ever offered and the only one certified, marking it as absent from the Santa Cruz, Paulistana, RLM, and Eliasberg collections.
