Republic Cast "National Convention" Medal L'An I (1792) MS62 PCGS, Maz-318, VG-338. By Andre Galle. A rare "test" medal produced for the National Convention by the artists assembled at Lyon. Cast from bell metal, and clearly inspired by the iconic 1783 Libertas Americana design of the nascent United States (and likewise struck in France). A fascinating issue thus, and one that continues to draw collector attention for its historical and aesthetic appeal. Matte-like surfaces of deep mahogany, with the typical slight weakness to the upper points of the hair curls due to difficulty of striking the high relief of the design upon the hard metal alloy.
